orquidea
context
Orquídea was developed as a product design project focused on improving the growth conditions of orchids while addressing environmental impact. The challenge was to design a vase that not only supports the plant’s needs but also reflects a conscious approach to sustainability.
concept
The project explores the idea of giving life on two levels: nurturing plant growth while contributing to environmental restoration.
The vase is designed as a system that supports orchids, while its material and form communicate a deeper connection to nature. By using recycled ocean plastic, the project links the care of a single plant to the regeneration of a larger ecosystem.
The water droplet form reinforces this relationship, symbolizing both nourishment and the origin of the material.
process
Identified key needs of orchids: ventilation, controlled watering, and stem support
Researched sustainable materials and selected plastic from The Gravity Wave, made from recycled fishing nets recovered from the ocean
Developed a form that integrates functional systems into the structure
Designed internal ventilation and watering mechanisms
Incorporated a hook support system to stabilize fragile stems
key decisions:
Using recycled ocean plastic to align material with environmental intent
Designing the vase as a functional ecosystem, not just a container
Translating the concept into a water droplet form to symbolize ocean preservation
Ensuring that all functional elements are integrated into the design
outcome
A sustainable vase that supports orchid growth through integrated systems while also embodying environmental restoration. The use of recycled fishing nets gives new life to ocean waste, creating a direct link between product design and ecological impact.
reflection
This project taught me how to connect material, concept, and function into a cohesive narrative. I learned that sustainability can be embedded not only in the material but also in the meaning of the object. It reinforced my interest in designing products that operate across scales, from individual use to environmental impact.
